“US time zones” – instructional material
This good-looking worksheet explains time zones in the US. As an introduction you could ask your students why we change the time. After all there must be some pretty good reason behind it. Besides, depending on the age of your students it might be necessary to contrast GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) with UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). Many people are accustomed to the former even though it is obsolete now (and has been for more than 30 years already!).Excerpt
There are four time zones in the 48 contiguous (touching) U.S. states. The time zones are called Pacific Time, Mountain Time, Central Time, and Eastern Time. California is in the Pacific time zone (PT). New York and Washington, D.C. are in the Eastern time zone (ET). It is three hours earlier in California than in New York. California: 9:00 A.M. = New York: 12:00 noon The map shows the states of the United States and their time zones. Alaska and Hawaii have their own different time zones.
