“Shopping” listening and speaking practice
Shared by Kate
- The lesson is based on Situational Dialogues booklet. I don’t think it’s still available. [admin: It is available here.]
Presentation
- Hand out the worksheet and ask Ss where the dialogue is taking place. Elicit some keywords connected with shopping.
- Tell Ss to complete in pairs first column of the dialogue.
- Ss listen to the recording and check their answers.
- Ss listen to all the dialogues and complete the gaps. At this point they will have recreated the whole dialogue and should have a correct version of it.
Practice
Notice that dialogues are substitional. It means that the meaning of all items in any given same row is the same - they are just reworded. Therefore, they can be freely mixed within a row in the table. You can:
- Practice dialogues in pairs.
- Ask every Ss in a class to learn one item by heart and then try to recreate the dialogue orally in a group.
- Role play the dialogue. Just place a desk and a chair in the middle of the classroom - that will be the counter.
- Experiment and experiment. Be careful though not to overuse it - it quickly bores Ss. Preferably, you could begin a lesson with it as a warmup for a few lessons.
