How to present new vocabulary?

Shared by Marek from Poland

I always have trouble presenting new vocabulary items to beginners and false beginners. For obvious reasons I cannot use monolingual dictionaries and translating words from English into Ss native language all the time feels a bit wrong.

So the idea is to use pictures. But not pictures alone! Pictures and the text. Download the worksheet below and see what it looks like. The worksheet has been copied from a very old booklet titled Stories for Reproduction. If you teach elementary students I strongly recommend you to buy it! [edit: The booklet is available here.]

Procedure

  1. Students are not allowed to write anything down during this practice!

  2. Read out the full text yourself changin pictures into words while reading. If your students can’t guess what a picture shows you can translate it into their native tounge. Just make they don’t write anything down.

  3. Practice. Students read out the text changing pictures into words. One person per one line of text.

  4. When they got the grasp of it - each student should read out the whole text.

  5. Don’t spend too much time on it. You can begin every class with this task until Ss have no trouble with the text anymore.

  6. It’s a good idea to preapare a few such texts. You can take just about any text, delete the words, and put picture in. You will find lots and lots of pictures at Google Image Search.
