Pancakes are the favourite food on this day. For this reason it is often referred to as Pancake Day. Historically, both meat and eggs were forbidden throughout Lent, so the tradition was to eat all meat on Monday and all eggs on Tuesday before it started. The eggs were eaten in pancakes and this practice still remains. One of the main customs of this day is the pancake race, in which contestants have to run while tossing pancakes.
