“Death of an Innocent” - DUI lesson plan

Lead-in
- Bring an empty bottle of wine / beer or liquor to the classroom. Ask your Ss to close their eyes or simply turn off the light if it’s dark outside. Make Ss smell the bottle and guss what the lesson will be about. Alcohol of course.
Alcohol
- Ask students what kinds of alcohol they know and why people drink alcohol.
Problems
- Ask learners to work in pairs and come up with a list of problems caused by alcohol. When done Ss present their list to the rest of the class.
Poem
- Ss quickly read the poem and complete it with correct form of the word drive. Ss read out the poem to check the task.
Poetry Analysis
- Dictate the questions and ask Ss to analyze the poem and answer them in pairs.
- Who are the other characters in the poem?
- Who is the poem addressed to?
- Where is the plot taking place?
- Who is the main character of the poem? Describe the person?
- What does the main character feel like? (physically and mentally)
The one
- Ask one person to read out the last sentence. How do you understand that question? What does the one mean?
Show ss 2 budweiser commercials that advertise the idea of having a designated driver. Then ask Ss to write a definition of a designated driver using the one who structure.

I absolutely love this poem! It’s a simple yet touching story. I found it about 10 years ago somewhere on the Internet and isntantly fell in love with.
