Paper Planes Icebreaker
Task
1) Each student gets an A4 format piece of paper on which s/he writes three facts about themselves. Encourage the class to think about what makes them special/different. For example, everybody lives somewhere but not everybody has a flat above an antique shop or pine trees in their backyard, which might be their case; most teenagers play computer games in their free time, but hardly any young person can cook lasagne. They don't have to write full sentences; phrases or single words will do (e.g. dance classes 3 times a week).
2) When they are done, ask them to make a plane with their paper and throw it into the air. While music is playing in the background, students are playing with the planes. They pick up ones that land nearby and throw them up again.
3) Stop the music. Every student takes one plane, reads what is inside and prepares questions to ask other students about the info. The aim is to identify the person in the class who matches the facts. If necessary, help students with the questions. Students walk around the class and interview others.
4) The activity ends when all the students have been identified.
5) You can continue by asking the group what they've learnt about particular students. Feel free to ask follow-up questions to the students described.
