Meaningful scrabble / domino game

Shared by Adam

It’s a very simple task that will help your students practice associating ideas. The ability is especially needed during oral tests when a person is presented with a topic about which one knows very little or nothing.

Most examiners will accept diverting from the topic as long as one can show the connection between ideas.

Procedure

  1. Distribute 2-3 blank, rectangular sheets of paper to each student.

  2. Tell Ss to write one noun / verb / collocation per sheet.

  3. Put one sheet of paper on the floor. Tell Ss that it is their starting point

  4. Now Ss have to place sheets of paper next to the ones that are already on the floor if they think that they are meaningfully connected. Tell Ss that there are no good or bad answers as long as they can justify their opinion later.

  5. When all Ss have run out of sheets you ask them to justify their opinions.

Note

Ss have to include all the adjacent sheets of paper in their justifications. It means that if a learner put the word “cat” next to the word “jump” and the word “car” the sentence should go sth like “The cat got scared of a car and jumped on the table…”. Everything is acceptable as long as it is even remotely logical.
