First Conditional chaining
Shared by Kate
The idea is not new, but I’ve found it works really great with all groups of students. It is a typical grammar drill with a bit of meanigfulness added. It can be used to practice just about any conditional sentence, not only first conditional. This is how it works:
The teacher begins by saying one first conditional sentence, for example: If I don’t go to work tomorrow, I will get fired. Then, the teacher chooses a student who has to form another first conditional sentence using the sentence ending provided, for example: If I get fired, I will buy a newspaper and start looking for another job. Then the students chooses the next person who has to continue.
A typical drill could go like this:
-
Teacher: If I don’t go to work tomorrow, I will get fired.
Student 1: If I get fired, I will buy a newspaper and start looking for another job.
Student 2: If I buy a newspaper and start looking for another job, I will have to go for a job interview.
etc.
Works well with adults. You can steer the drill into any topic by changing the initial sentence. Good luck!
